National Watercolor Exhibition 1999

Jensen Wing Gallery

January 15 - March 21

Juror’s Statement
"Watercolor is the most versatile of all painting media. It encourages the artist to find a personal style. The works in the AWA exhibition illustrate how widely diverse the medium can be.

In selecting the paintings for the exhibition, I was pleased to find vital and unique images in an unexpected range of subject and technique, which make for an exceptional show."

Virginia Cobb, N.A., A.W.S.

Curator’s Statement

"This is the first National sponsored by this group and from all appearances it is an auspicious debut. I have observed over the past few years when we have had other National Watercolor Shows that although the show’s technical expertise and execution of the works were of the highest caliber, there was always a certain "safe-ness" in subject or in concept. This exhibition, however, seems to move beyond that self-imposed border, and though a few pieces seem less technically capable, the risks taken are greater and consequently the show is more visually exciting. Congratulations to the Arizona Watercolor Association on a most rewarding beginning of National Watercolor Exhibitions."

George Palovich, Curator, West Valley Art Museum
