About the AWA

The Arizona Watercolor Association (the AWA) was founded in 1960 by  professional watercolor artists and  instructors. The AWA is growing in stature and membership. It hosts a National Watercolor Exhibition, and two Membership Exhibitions, all juried by nationally acclaimed artists. Fueled by the energy of enthusiastic members, the AWA is actively elevating the Fine Art of Watercolors to new heights.  The AWA is affiliated with the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and the Arts Council of Phoenix. A nonprofit organization, the Association has become a major influence throughout Arizona. Membership extends across and beyond state boundaries. Many in the AWA are signature members of the prestigious American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.

How do I enter a juried show?

If you are a new member or did not get a prospectus for our next show, then please download the Prospectus. Fill out the Prospectus form, send it in with slides of your entries, and enclose your entry fee. If your paintings are accepted, then you bring them in or send them to the address designated on the prospectus. For more information, please call the  Exhibition Chairperson, who will be delighted to help.

How do I join the AWA?

Download a Membership Application, fill it out and mail it to the Membership Chairperson.
You are cordially invited to become a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. The exhibitions of the Association are among the best in the state and contribute to artistic progress throughout Arizona. AWA sponsors two major membership exhibitions each year and and one National Exhibition every 18 months.
As a member, you can participate in exhibitions, workshops, on-location painting events, fun and festivities.    You may vote, hold office and enter your artwork to be juried in all exhibitions of the Association. Membership entitles you to receive newsletters, attend meetings and workshops and to receive invitations to all social functions of the Association. Members’ names are listed in the annual directory if applications and dues are received before the May 31 deadline.
Your dues will be $35 per year. The fiscal year commences June 1.  If you don't get your dues in by July 31, then you are subject to a $10 late fee for a renewed membership.  If you submit your dues after March 1, then your contribution will apply to membership for the next year.

How do I become a juried member?

You're eligible once your art work has been accepted in three AWA "membership-only" juried shows.  You need to submit an Honor Application. Send it to the representative of the Coatimundi Society listed on the application. Once you're juried, then you're eligible to be appointed as a delegate to represent the Association at regional and national organizations. And you can give AWA lectures and demonstrations.

Whom should I call for ... ?

Jennie Johnson loves to talk about the AWA. Please call her between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Arizona Standard Time, at (602) 942-3157. As President Emeritus of the AWA, Jennie often knows who is  the best person for you to call.

What is this I hear about an AWA Honor Society?

In 1984, a new honor society was established. It consists of members of the AWA who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of watercolor. Such membership is awarded by merit alone, in accordance with a point system as published by the Coatimundi Society Committee. The highest rank in the Society is Royal Scorpion member. If you have earned points in accordance with Honor Society guidelines, published in the AWA directory, please download the  Honor Application, fill it out and submit it.  Please click here to download a summary of the the what, the why and the how for our points and procedures.
